Bärbel Smith is a German-born, Canadian painter who grew up near Huntsville, Ontario and trained in part at the Alberta University of the Arts under William Parker before living in Saskatchewan and Montreal and eventually settling near Ottawa. Working in acrylic on stretched linen canvas with a restricted palette of primary colours, she distills the Canadian landscape into luminous, glazed layers, drawing on the Group of Seven and Art Deco to emphasize light and atmosphere.
