Born in Kadoma, Zimbabwe, in 1962, Allen Egan began painting at sixteen, influenced by landscape Impressionism, before studying graphic design at Harare Polytechnic. His practice evolved from portraits of rural African subjects to figurative compositions informed by landscape, surrealism and illustration. Combining disparate references, Egan places figures in unexpected environments, creating technically assured, cinematic scenes suspended between an unseen past and an uncertain outcome.
