Elva’s transition into in-depth abstract realism is the culmination of a long, evolving creative journey driven by a constant desire for artistic innovation. Over decades of dedicated practice, she has continuously refined her ability to translate the world around her. By studying and capturing intricate, often-overlooked details, she breaks down natural form and flow into tactile elements, harmonizing them through intuitive colour and fluid movement on canvas. This organic process brings together the visible surface and the deeper, subconscious rhythms of the environment.Elva grew up in Woodstock, Ontario and discovered painting when she was quite young.
Originally from Woodstock, Ontario, Elva discovered her passion for painting at a young age. Since 1982, she has lived in Toronto’s west end, maintaining a studio in Parkdale—minutes away from the marshes, wetlands, and waterways that serve as her primary muses. Through excursions along Lake Ontario and in High Park, she chronicles the changing seasons, the dance of light and shadow, and the movement of streams sheltered within a bustling urban matrix. This unique "urban-sylvan alchemy" forms the foundation of her work, balancing nature, serendipity, and intention.

Her meticulous painting technique mirrors this philosophy, marrying years of experimentation with a strong foundation in traditional brushwork. Elva embraces the mutability of our "liquid reality" through fluid acrylics and specialized mediums. By manipulating gravity and agitation, she allows intrinsic patterns to emerge naturally, deliberately interrupting the fluid flow of paint to startle predictability and provoke complex visual entanglements. The resulting canvases capture both the immediate surface of the natural world and the profound, unconscious reverberations it leaves behind.
