Elizabeth Haney

Liz Haney is a Canadian visual artist whose abstract landscape works reflect a deep engagement with environmental themes. Trained in painting and photography, she holds a BFA from York University and has furthered her studies through leading arts institutions. Her layered surfaces—built with pastel and pencil—invite immersive visual exploration, encouraging multiple interpretations of the natural world and our connection to it.Liz Haney is a Canadian visual artist whose abstract landscape impressions work to evoke deep sensory experiences, and offer a commentary on the precarious state of the Environment. Liz holds a BFA in painting and photography from York University and has further studied both fields at the University of Toronto, Humber College and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Growing up in a family of artists and being encouraged to paint as a child, Liz was drawn to this creative path from a young age.

Liz has worked at the Art Gallery of Ontario as part of the curatorial team at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She Has also offered there educational programs for youth and tactile tours for the blind. Engaging with youth and disability-centred programming has inspired Liz’s artistic approach, as she embraces exploration, experimentation, adaptation, and alternative forms of expression. Working with layers of pastel/pencil is an important facet of her practice, as it creates a complex surface, and allows the viewer to look in different ways. For Liz, painting is about working your way across the surface and getting lost in it, recognizing there can be many ways of engaging with and understanding the world around us and the entities we interact with.
