Her academic background includes a BFA in black and white film photography from the University of Florida and a Master's in Art Education from the University of Georgia. Post-graduation, she spent several years teaching photography and fi ne arts, covering a range of topics from pinhole photography to advanced techniques, and integrating current events and art history. Fortin's style is influenced by notable photographers such as Dorothea Lange, Sally Mann, and Niki Boon, and she honed her skills in film following a workshop with Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai in 2002.
Fortin's current work, a series of large format museum-quality fi ne art, focuses on the fragility and power of our planet and bodies. In this series, she collaborates
with
ballet dancers, capturing their movements in an underwater setting that defi es gravity. Immersed in this aquatic environment, the dancers become embodiments of strength and grace, vividly illustrating themes of rebirth, renewal, and transformation. This artistic expression goes beyond just physical depiction, as Fortin ventures into a realm of visual storytelling that revives the forgotten heroines of classical and western tragedies. Her work offers a unique glimpse into another realm, where the female form—in all its strength and grace—glides, floats, and balances, symbolizing much more than just physical beauty. By blending the resilience of ballet with the transformative nature of water, Fortin transcends traditional photography, inviting viewers to experience a journey of hope and the profound power of renewal.
