Allen Sapp

Allen Sapp

Allen Sapp (1928–2015, Red Pheasant Reserve, Saskatchewan) was a Plains Cree painter celebrated for his depictions of reserve life in the 1930s and 40s. A self-taught artist, he overcame illness and hardship to create works rooted in memory and cultural tradition. Encouraged by patron Dr. Allan Gonor, Sapp painted intimate scenes of family, survival, and community with honesty and reverence. His art became a vital record of Cree life and earned him recognition across Canada and internationally.
