John’s interest in art and painting, in particular, started fairly early with art classes taught by local artists. After graduating from the Illustration program at Sheridan College, he worked as a freelance Illustrator and then moved into doing graphic design and pre-press production for the printing industry. Several years ago, he decided to focus more seriously on his painting and has been developing this career ever since. He now paints full time from his studio in Toronto.
His passion for painting landscapes stems from a simple desire to evoke the sense of serenity and beauty that nature instills in him. Rural and wild places are cherished as they induce a meditative calm, a removal from the distractions of everyday life.
What catches his interest is the unfolding drama of light and shadow in combination with the graphic, abstract qualities the landscape can possess. His inspiration comes from the timeless, enduring, yet ever changing qualities of the land.
In his paintings, he attempts to express his sense of wonder at how changing light can transform the seemingly mundane into the extraordinary. His painting is above all an exercise in trying to look at the world with fresh eyes and, hopefully, a unique perspective.
